I recently finished a Soul of the Creator run where the MT died but I, as the OT, didn't. Once they'd died, I promptly turned on my tank stance so as to take heat off the rest of the party, but I didn't move up the enmity rankings very quickly (probably because I neglected to use Provoke). After they were rezzed, I kept tank stance on for about 30 seconds so they could recover, then turned it off and shirked to them so they could hold all the enmity. My question is as follows: Aside from not using Provoke to move to the top of the list, did I respond to the situation correctly?
Yes, as OT, you should take over immediately if MT dies by provoking at once. Alternately, you can turn on your tank stance awhile after combat starts, and this ensures that if MT dies, you become the new tank as you will be #2 in enmity.
Usually, if the other tank dies, you can just continue tanking. If the other tank provokes to take back the boss, you can shirk them, if not, it is probably best to just continue as MT, in order to reduce erratic turning of the boss.
