Note: I find myself wanting to express my opinions on several topics and I think this is the place torrid. to be. My opinions are personal thoughts (and are not a critique), which I am not claiming to be right nor wrong. I am not expecting comments, otherwise I would have went to the official forum. In the event that there would be, I honor and respect everybody else’s opinion, though I’d prefer a healthy conversation over that of a heated debate.
Some Current Opinion(s):
Some FFXIV players believe there is a pattern in the real names of members of the Convocation of Fourteen
Rasler’s Opinion: SPOILERS ALERT
It looks like there is, and it is from Greek mythology. First, there is Emet-Selch who is named Hades. As his dialogue have said, the one who will awoke his brethren from deep slumber. This is almost similar to the Greek god of the underworld, where souls from those who are eternally sleeping go to in the afterlife.
Then there is Mitron, whose name is Artemis, which is the Greek goddess of the hunt and the moon. Loghrif, is Gaia, equivalent to the Greek primordial goddess of the earth.
Will it follow that the rest of the last group of the Convocation of Fourteen have real names from Greek Mythology? Maybe Lahabrea was Zeus and Elidibus was Erebos.
The WoL holds the seat of Azem. It is the title for the shepherd of the stars. Azeyma and Azim are related to the sun. The sun is just another star. As the players selects the gender of WoL, then either Apollo, Helios or Astraios for male and Alectrona or Eos or Hemera for females. Or it can be any of these names regardless of gender.
These are speculations, at the end of the day, the lore team may not even give Azem’s real name, as conventional in video games where one created the playable character.
I am not surprised at this, everyone 'borrows' from the Greeks. ;-)
Other storytellers and world builders take stuff from Greek Mythology ALL the time, and who can blame them. If you REALLY look into it beyond the common stuff people tend to know about, there are some incredibly complex character relationships and storylines that would put anything modern to shame.
Them Greeks SURE knew how to make up some drama and had one hell of an imagination. ;p
Yes, that's right. I've had stories from books, video games, films and tv series that were based in Greek myth. It is one of the most influencial literary works there is out there.
The take in this is they made it very subtle at first but would have some impact later on (like in Assassin's Creed). So who know what they have in store for FFXIV, we'll find out I guess.
