Little Ala Mhigo

公開
The twins are helping out with random tasks right now, and I'm on strict no-moving orders. It's one of the rare times I don't mind--the nausea is mostly gone, but my vision still spins if I turn my head too fast.

But, as usual, I should start at the beginning.

After the stew the other day, Alisaie needled me for the details of my investigation and signed herself up to help. I did bring up the porxies, but it seems she's been put on a forced break, albeit a shorter one.

Of course, I accepted her offer--it's not like she'd actually rest if I said no, and technically I'm also on a forced break. So if it's fine for me to do, then it's fine for her to join, right? Or so I'll claim.

To be honest, we're....a bit too similar these days, but I don't know if it's a good or bad thing. I'd like to keep my flaws from rubbing off on her, at least.

Anyway, we kidnapped Alphinaud for his artistic talents and headed for Little Ala Mhigo.

We found traction right at the start--Gundobald could vaguely remember my guardian himself, and pointed out elders that might've known us. I'm not sure if it was the prospect of childhood stories or finally having something to do, but the info was oil on the fire for the twins, and they hurried off.

I stayed with Gundobald--he had picked his words carefully, the way he does when Este is involved. He knew we were pursuing dangerous information--that we're looking for a Garlean, though he didn't say as much.

I've gone after the easier leads every other time he's clammed up like this, but the twins were handling those...so I wanted to try and whittle what I could out of him.

A challenge, of sorts, and one I probably lost. He'd kept quiet on the Garlean aspect of our target all these years, after all, and my inability to budge him on that topic didn't come as a surprise.

Still, he was kind enough to paint a general picture of the settlement in those days.

The refugee camps had no name at the time, and consisted several self-governing groups, friendly but separate, formed generally by hometown. Some were several families from the same village, others were fragments as small as a parent-child pair. The latter would camp near larger groups or other independents for safety from monsters, but otherwise acted separately.

Being both a hunter and from a different camp, Gundobald didn't know me directly, but a Miqo'te child in a Hyur population sticks out. So he noticed that I was often looked after by other survivors--and occasionally the U clan--while my guardian was afield.

Eventually, between members and groups leaving and new refugees arriving, the groups merged and formed Little Ala Mhigo, and my guardian and I disappeared in the shuffle.

The twins returned around that point, with the fruits of their investigations.

Using a sketch of my younger self as a jumping point, Alphinaud had assembled a rough--an assessment he restated several times--portrait from the elders' memories. Still, it's a near-complete sketch, and useful as-is to track our Garlean in places he doesn't have such a long history.

Looking at it...I wish it brought something back, but even now his face in my memories is washed out by the Light.

And then Alisaie--despite the smug grin of victory, she somehow kept quiet throughout her brother's findings. It's probably something about sibling competition rather than mental fortitude, but regardless, her pride was well-earned.

Unable to show an approximation like her brother, she'd taken the approach of asking about "a Hyur with a Miqo'te child". However, she'd also assumed that our Garlean had a third eye, and therefore used some kind of covering.

An unusual bandana or hat would've been a solid lead, but by combining her questions with a vague gesture at her forehead and crude sketches in the dirt, she'd been able to identify the exact item.

The design is--to my knowledge--unique. Moreover, it's one we're all familiar with, and ties several questions together.

And it's none other than the one that started this probe into my history--Cid's goggles.

That knowledge was all it took to unleash the Echo--or rather, the forced recall that hijacks it. But this time, the stray flakes I'd gotten before were replaced by a proper avalanche--boulders and all--and I'm still reorienting myself....nevermind picking through the actual rubble.

I keep seeing Alisaie's face in the moment it hit. An expression of fear, of enduring a waking nightmare. I understand, I know how it looked--a mental assault, a sudden collapse--like the Exarch was taking me away again.

And....I left her shouting for me after all. Sorry.

Hmm...I think the worst of the side-effects are over, so we might as well head back.

Well, that, and Alisaie keeps glancing over here. I don't have to be a magitek engineer to know she's blaming herself, even though none of us could've predicted it.

Besides, I have an idea how to cheer her up.

---

I let Alphinaud go on ahead to report our findings to Cid, and returned Alisaie's words to her--"there's something I want you to see".

It's not a view with a revelation, but it's one I keep returning to. The same kind of fixation that carried Alisaie's steps up the tower in Mord Souq again and again, even when every detail had etched itself in her mind.

....I should check in on the Mord guard, bring him some worms.

Regardless, I don't know if it was a good reward, or a reward at all, but I wanted to share it. If nothing else, it did its job as a distraction.

Apparently, I got caught by the tower again, so she called my name and took that before I could react. Called it revenge (for what, I'm not sure) and then called me too serious-looking.

I think....when she finally wins one of our competitions, I'll be put in the same category as Alphinaud. Luckily, I can swim.

With my expression as an excuse, we wandered Mor Dhona for a while longer. I took one more picture from the set, and she kept the rest.

Eventually, I'll show her the Steel Vigil--of Ishgard on a backdrop of stars. Tonight will be fog, though, so it'll just be the two of us.
