In my short time, in-game I've been foolish to think people are any different in-game than in real life. Everyone wants something. Whether it's a place to belong, friends who understand, or the opposite; those who prey upon those I mentioned earlier.
There's usually a pattern. They tell you they like you, say all the things you want to hear, and slowly begin to assert their dominance. So many, like myself fall victim to this because we want to believe people are generally good. They're not.
I can't count how many times I've listened to someone talk about how much they care about others and in the same breath say something like, "I don't even care, I'm just being real." No, you're being a hypocritical moron who uses people to compensate for your clearly self-aware truth that you're a terrible person. They claim they want friendship and would "fight for their people." But they don't ask you to fight for them, they assume you do and proceed to take out their insecure others.
Don't let people cower behind a facade of righteousness that hides an insecure, petulant child. If someone ever tells you they understand you, and will always be on your side no matter what, be wary. Once they've gotten their pound of flesh to compensate for their failures of being a good person, they'll dismiss you since they can't dismiss themselves. These people will never admit when they're wrong because their cognitive dissonance prevents it. If they're wrong, they're the terrible people they claim to abhor, so you see the pattern.
If anyone ever says they went out of their way for you, took a liking to you, etc only to turn around and blame you for walking away from their toxicity understand they can't help it, it's just who they'll always be. Someone who thinks so highly of themselves they'll never see how deep the hole they're in actually is,
