Madoka's life has always revolved around facade. She was born of the unholy union of a powerful cat-demon and a high priestess of Izanami. Her mother, in order to hide her, left her as a baby in the care of a priest of an Izanagi shrine and was never seen again.

During her early years, Madoka (under the surname Kisaragi) was taught by her tutor to use her innate shapeshifting powers to appear human and blend in the human society. Her imitation was perfect, every feature, every word, every gesture was perfectly "human-like", with no traces of her cat-demon heritage. Her facade having given such good results, Madoka gradually begun to rely more and more on it. She placed a sealing rune on her body to seal her powers away and forgot completely about her cat-demon part in order to live a normal life as a human. But when war broke out, Madoka was forced to leave her facade behind, break away her own seal and assume her real form in order to fully use her powers so she could save the ones she care about the most. The pain that this process caused to her made her more shy and somehow mistrustful of her surroundings than she already was. Only meeting the Overlord Yuriko saved her from the despair of the process' aftermath. Yuriko took Madoka in her family, granting her the Nijihara surname and finally granting her a place that she could call "home", without having to hide from anyone and being able to honor Lord Izanagi and Lady Izanami freely.

Nowadays, Madoka travels the worlds with her sister Yuriko, a being created by Madoka and the original Yuriko via a complex magic process called Soul Fusion. While Yuriko's personality retains most of the original's traits, Madoka still has many traces of her shyness and her tendency to rely on facade: she is the older of the sisters and yet she likes to make others believe she's the younger, she is very shy about showing her body and wears always loose robes but likes to wear expensive and sexy lingerie underneath, and she tries not to stand out and not to talk much, leaving the communication task to her sister.

And so, the Nijihara sisters, together as if they were two parts of the same being, begin their adventures on Eorzea...
