Mariel Vivas was born during the Garlean invasion of Ala Mhigo to an Ala Mhigan Reistance fighter and a Midlander nurse who came to Ala Mhigo to provide aid. When the Resistance started to falter, they realized they could not stay in Ala Mhigo any longer if they wanted a life for them and their child, so like so many others, they fled to Thanalan.
In the ensuing disastrous flight, Mariel's mother was captured and killed by the Garlean invasion force, whilst Mariel and her father narrowly escaped to find a new life. While Mariel was too young to remember the events of Ala Mhigo, her father fondly talks about the old country and Mariel's mother, particularly over a tall glass of mulled wine.
In the years following, Mariel's father did his best to raise his daughter, and while times were tough like for so many Ala Mhigan refugees, Mariel remembers her childhood fondly, albeit she wanted nothing more to learn to fight and join the fight against Garlemald. Finally after years of pestering and pleading, Mariel's father relented to train her as a pugilist.
Over the ensuing years, Mariel trained with her father every day hoping one day to surpass him, and at the age of 21, she finally beat her father in a sparring match. The day after, with the support of her father, she hopped on a carriage to Ul'dah in the hopes of helping in the fight against Garlemald, not knowing what her destiny had in store for her.
To this day, Mariel regularly writes him letters and stuffs the envelope with gil so it's overflowing to ensure that her father can live out the rest of his days in peace and comfort.
