Pinpin's dad was an adventurer and he died while on a journey. His mum resents him for that, for leaving her behind to raise their son alone. His family used to be nomadic but once his parents made enough money to comfortably purchase a plot of land near Gridania, Pinpin's mother decided that they should settle down and give Pinpin a more "stable" life. Yet his father couldn't bring himself to stay put. When Pinpin got older, he found old letters and things his father sent home to Pinpin and his mother (things his mother had hid) and he started to get that itch for adventuring too.
As much as he promised her he'd be okay, Pinpin's mother refused to let him go. However, he kept trying to get a little bit of exploring done on every task, no matter how trivial, his mother would give him-- Taking the long route, taking a different path, maybe chatting with people he wouldn't normally talk to, spending time to listen to stories in the inns, etc. It wasn't until he heard of the Adventurer's Guild that Pinpin decided to ask his mother once more.
Again, she refused but Pinpin stood his ground in that he couldn't be kept away from the world forever. He understood his mother’s position in that she didn’t want to lose him, but he couldn’t let her fear keep him from going towards his dream. After a heartfelt conversation filled with sobs, his mother gave her blessing. In her heart, she believed that she’d never see him again. But Pinpin has dutifully written to her often and visited when time allowed on his journeys. It helps relieve her worries but the fear is still there. Every time he visits home, it’s like she’s seeing a miracle. It’s not until Pinpin starts to make a name for himself that she gains a little faith that he’ll be okay.
